Recently, GN Solids Control company made a complete mud cleaning system for Coal Bed Methane (CBM) drilling for East Asia market. The CBM rig mud system consists of double deck shale shaker, mud cleaner with only desander cone, dewatering unit with decanter centrifuge for dewater unit. The total system can control the solids content effectively, normally, after GN CBM mud system, the solids separation can be reduced to 5μm ~ 15μm. The GN CBM mud system can also mix qualified drilling mud for the CBM drilling rig. The system can increase the drilling speed and prolong lifetime of the mud pump and drilling rigs. Combined with GN drilling waste management, GN CBM drilling mud system can generate minimum drilling waste to reduce the effect to environment.


Equipment list and the treatment process of the CBM drilling mud system
1) Double deck shale shaker model GNZS705E
The first shaker deck use steel screen with size 1mm to separate coarse particles over 1mm. The solids discharge and transferred by screw conveyer. Clean fluids falls down to the bottom deck and further separated by fine screens of the bottom deck and then fall into mud tank.
2) Mud cleaner GNZJ703E-3S. The mud cleaner with a big shake GNZS703E, and with only desander cone, without desilter cone. After separated by the desander cone, clean fluids enter into mud tank and mud tank.
3) 40ft containerized Dewatering unit with 3 compartment for continue flocculate. The whole flocculate system mounted into a 40ft fabricated container, complete with a decanter centrifuge big bowl GNLW553VFD and a feeding pump for the centrifuge.

Recently, a customer request decanter centrifuge system for water / oily waste treatment. After face to face talk with customer for their request , and per his jobsite condition, GN engineering team recommend 2 centrifuge packages for the customer:
1) Decanter centrifuge for Water/Oily Waste Treatment
It is composed of big bowl centrifuge and feeding pump
1.1) Centrifuge model GNLW453VFD. It is a big bowl centrifuge for big volume capacity. The centrifuge is with bowl size 18’’  
1.2) Feed pump for the Big bowl centrifuge GNG60A-150
 centrifuge for water oily treatment
2) Centrifuge for Water/Oily Waste Treatment lower capacity for mobility
Vary from the big volume Water/Oily Waste Treatment system, GN made a combined centrifuge packages, It is components of a 14’’ normal size decanter centrifuge, centrifuge feeding pump and a portable frame to combine all the items.
1) 14’’ centrifuge model is GNLW363BG-VFD, it is GN high standard for international market.
2) Feeding pump for the centrifuge is GNG30A-075, the pump is from German brand company: Netzsch.
3) A Skid mounted frame, centrifuge, VFD control panel and feed pump all mounted on the skid. It is fast for the customer to lift the whole package on trailer skid for fast movement.
This package with a small capacity then 18’’ centrifuge and the centrifuge is also small size. The whole package can be put into container for international vessel shipment.

Screw Conveyor is called Auger Conveyor, in oilfield drilling waste management, it is widely used for drilling cuttings transfer to feed to the drilling cuttings dryer.

Normally, totally 3 screw conveyor are needed for the drilling cuttings dryer system.
Two screw conveyors will be deployed between the mud cleaner and shale shaker and the vertical cuttings dryer unit to transport drilled cutting discharged from the rig shakers and the mud cleaner to the drilling cuttings dryer. The length of the first screw conveyor depends on the mud tank solids control equipment layout, normally 25 meters is required for the 3 shale shaker and 1 mud cleaner drilling cuttings discharge.

The third screw conveyor is required to remove the processed dry  cutting from  Vertical cuttings dryer  to the drilling  cuttings  skips.  The Screw conveyor under the shale shaker and mud cleaner is  about  25m length  will  be  placed  on  top  of  the walkway in front of the shakers and mud cleaner with enough extension to allow for an emergency skip to be placed before the second screw conveyor. This Screw conveyor will  be used both during WBM drilling phase and OBM drilling phase. Two discharge holes with a sliding plate will be made on the screw conveyor to allow for cuttings discharge into the coral during
WBM phase and to be closed during OBM phase. A third discharge hole will be towards the end of the auger extension to discharge into a drilling cuttings skip in case of emergency repair or maintenance on the Vertical Cuttings Dryer.

The next Scew conveyor (2) about 10 mtr length will be at an angle (90Deg) from the first screw conveyor, facing the coral direction. This screw conveyor will be inclined vertically to about 10-15 deg off its swivel base line, to be able to discharge drilling cuttings at the top/feed end of the drilling cuttings dryer.

The third (3) conveyor about 6 mtr length will be installed beneath the Drilling Cuttings Cryer chute and inclined outwards to fill the double skip arrangement.

We take maintenance for example. Bearing is a main and most important part in high speed rotating equipment like centrifuge, and it is cost high. Good and regular Lubrication is necessary for a reliable performance and longer lifetime of bearing. Different bearing, the lubrication duration is much different, from 48 hours from 1000hours. People have to make many records to insure regular maintenance. And normally, it is that, they remember to lubricating when there is abnormal performance. It is not good. The drilling cuttings treatment system with both centrifuge and vertical cuttings dryer is used after mud solids control system. Formerly, many drilling rifs, they just discharge cuttings to drilling site after come out from mud solids control shale shaker, desander, desilter, mud cleaner. Nowadays, more and more government increase standard on drilling field solids discharge.

There are 4 parameters can be changed on GN VFD Decanter centrifuge:

1) Bowl speed: More speed, fluids more clean, and accordingly, solids more dryer

2) Conveyer speed: More conveyer speed, the centrifuge push material more fast, means shorter time for separation, more solids in fluids

3) Fluids height at centrifuge big end (the motor end): Now it is already the largest depth. The higher the fluids level, more clean of the fluids.

4) Pump flow: according to different treating material and different performance customer want, capacity different.

Centrifuge operator can follow below steps to find out the most suitable bowl speed, conveyer speed and pump feeding flow for decanter centrifuge in specified jobsite:

Step 1 find out the most suitable bowl speed of VFD decanter centrifuge:

Fixed the conveyor speed, like 30rpm, fix the pump flow, e.g.: 10m3/h: then increase bowl speed more and more. For more speed, the fluids phase from centrifuge will be more clean. So job site operator can try from 2500 / 2800/ 3000/3200 rpm. After 10min around normal running, take sample for each speed.

Compare the different samples to find out the best bowl speed.

Step 2 find out the best centrifuge conveyor speed:

Fix the bow speed as the same with step 1 found out, fixed the same pump flow, 10m3/h. Change conveyer speed from 23rpm, increase it more and more. For every conveyer speed, after 10min, take sample.

Compare different samples and find out the most suitable centrifuge conveyor speed for the jobsite.

Step 3: find out the biggest pump flow with best performance for the centrifuge in specified jobsite:

Set the most suitable bowl speed got from step 1. The most suitable conveyor speed from step 2, increase pump flow from 5m3/h. Increase it more and more, like, 5cbm, 8cbm, 10cbm, 15cbm, 18cbm, 20cbm, and compare the performance, to find the most suitable performance you want get.

After the 3 stages, you will find out the best performance can come out from decanter centrifuge in the specified jobsite.

Remember: Every time the treating material changed, the centrifuge operator should repeat the 3 steps to find out the new centrifuge setting suitable for the new condition.

Decanter centrifuge is a physical separation machine. If the final result cannot satisfy you, that means physical treatment not enough, you may need chemical treatment or combined with other process.
